Steven Soderbergh is filming a thriller in Seattle this week

If you see cameras and lighting equipment on Seattle streets during the next few weeks, it might be Steven Soderbergh and crew at work. They’re in town this week filming exteriors for “Kimi,” a thriller starring Zoe Kravitz as an agoraphobic Seattle tech worker who uncovers evidence of a crime. Soderbergh, known for numerous films including the Oscar-winning “Traffic,” is directing from a script by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park,” “Spider-Man”), with a cast that also features Byron Bowers, Jaime Camil, Jacob Vargas and Devin Ratray. A number of Seattleites will appear in the film as extras, recruited earlier this spring.

Interior scenes for “Kimi” were shot in Los Angeles earlier this spring.

A unit publicist declined to give specific information about the Seattle shoot. However, word about Monday’s shooting locations has gotten out. James Sido of the Downtown Seattle Association confirmed that merchants were sent notification of filming Monday at Westlake Park and on Pine Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues. That section of Pine Street will be closed between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday. A memo sent by Downtown Seattle Association/Metropolitan Improvement District said that the scene will feature more than 1,500 extras and will resemble a protest event, but noted “Rest assured this is not a real demonstration and filming will be contained to the permitted area.” According to that memo, local transit agencies have been advised of the road closures in the area, but no change to service is expected.

A request for clarification on the street closures sent to the Seattle Department of Transportation was referred to a spokesperson in the Office of Economic Development, who said “We do not share information about active or upcoming film productions working in Seattle.”

According to Deadline.com, “Kimi” will premiere on HBO Max, Soderbergh’s third collaboration with the streaming platform. “Let Them All Talk,” with Meryl Streep, premiered on HBO Max in December; “No Sudden Move,” a crime thriller with a starry ensemble cast (including Matt Damon and Don Cheadle, of Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s Eleven” films), was shot last year.
