Epoxy Grout vs. Cement Grout: What’s the Difference?

Traditional cement based grouts are made of water, cement and sand. Concrete tile grout is porous when set however, so ensuring a quality sealant is a must to assist in the prevention of staining or mould as a result of the material absorbing and retaining moisture. Epoxy grout differs from traditional grouts in that it is made up of filler powders and epoxy resins, resulting in a product that is resistant to moisture and staining when installed properly. It is also important to note that due the nature of epoxy grouting, there may be an increased cost in labour as your Tiler will have to move extremely quickly during its application while also ensuring the surrounding surfaces are kept clean. You should also keep in mind that small tiles (like mosaic tiles for example) will require significantly more grout to lay, further increasing the cost of the grout product itself. Your tile shop will advise you just how much grout is needed with respect to your specific tile selections’ sizing.

Epoxy Grouting vs. Cement Grouting: Care & Maintenance

Another crucial factor to consider when making your decision between these two tile grout options is the care and maintenance involved in each. Epoxy grouting will essentially be maintenance-free when installed correctly, making it a well sought after solution in applications where a light coloured grout is desired (as the epoxy grout will assist in ensuing a clean surface) while also providing a non-porous finish that is resistant to staining. This grout is an excellent choice for mosaic tiles, pool tiles and kitchen splashback tiles, ensuring a quality look that will stand up exceptionally well in these applications.

Cement grouting on the other hand is a porous finish that will require sealing at regular intervals in order to remain in its best condition. Although this type of grout is a more cost effective option, it may not always be the most suitable solution, especially where cleaning a large number of grout lines is a concern.
